Viable Tissue Explant Bank

Mosaic Laboratories procures viable cancer tissue and haematological cancers from patients under IRB approved protocols. Remnant tissue samples that are obtained during surgery and are not needed for diagnosis are divided with a portion of the sample going into transport media and another portion into 10% neutral buffered formalin. The transport media keeps the cancer cells alive during transport to Mosaic Laboratories. Once received the cancer tissue is disaggregated into individual cells or small spheroids of cells. The percent cancer and % viability are recorded, and cells are frozen viably in aliquots of approximately 500,000 cancer cells. Although delinked from regulated patient identifiers, samples come with general patient demographics and characterizing information including age, gender, site of cancer, cancer type, stage, grade and may include information on prior therapy. The portion of tissue that was placed in formalin is processed and embedded in paraffin and is often used for IHC, FISH or genetic testing. The current tissue bank contains over 1500 unique samples from the following cancer types:

  • Breast Cancer
  • Colorectal Cancer
